RN Desk: The use of vermi compost (earthworm compost) as a safe alternative to chemical fertilizers is increasing day by day for producing safe and healthy food. Many people, after fulfilling their own needs, are now selling vermi compost and making a good profit. According to the local agriculture office, farmers are responding positively to both the production and use of vermi compost.

Mukul Chandra Roy, a youth from Dublia village in Khansama Upazila and a student at Ranibandor Degree College, has created a buzz by commercially producing vermi compost. He supplies this organic fertilizer to surrounding districts and upazilas. After covering his costs, Mukul earns about 25,000 to 30,000 Taka every one and a half months right from his home.

Additionally, by selling live earthworms—an essential component in vermi compost production—at prices ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 Taka per kilogram, he earns extra income. Inspired by his success in balancing education and entrepreneurship, many others have become interested in vermi compost production.

Mukul says he had always dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur since childhood. To fulfill this dream, he began producing vermi compost using two rings after receiving training from the agriculture department alongside his studies. Currently, he is producing compost using twelve rings. Many farmers buy this organic fertilizer to use in various crops. With proper support from government and non-government sectors, vermi compost production can be expanded on a larger scale. This would not only meet the growing demand for organic fertilizers but also create employment opportunities for many.

Khansama Upazila Agriculture Officer Yasmin Akter stated that vermi compost is a key component in producing safe food. Its use enhances soil fertility. Applying vermi compost or organic fertilizer improves crop yield and quality, reduces pest and disease occurrence, and lowers overall farming costs. Farmers are being made aware of the benefits of using and producing vermi compost, and interested farmers are being provided with necessary advice and support.
